Micke Siskov

Let the Right One In

Micke Siskov is one of the boys who torment Oskar at school, and his role is not merely to stand beside Jonny: he helps make the bullying physically inescapable. In Oskar’s view, Micke and Jonny are among the worst of the group because they beat him and scratch him, while Tomas poses a different, more lasting threat through humiliation.

Place in the Bullying Group

Oskar distinguishes between the boys’ methods. He considers Tomas more dangerous in the long term because Tomas could use the Pissball to hurt and humiliate him repeatedly, but Tomas is almost never involved in physical attacks. Micke, by contrast, is usually present with Jonny when the threat is bodily violence. Oskar’s grim sense that this kind of assault is preferable to prolonged humiliation describes his constrained calculation as a victim, not an absence of fear.

Breaking into the Stall

When Oskar hides in a school toilet stall, Micke and Jonny search for him, shake and bang on the door, and call for him. The episode turns on the difference between the chase and its capture: Oskar has come to understand that the bullies’ pursuit has its own rules, and that being caught shifts the scene from their excitement in hunting him to the punishment they consider due. Micke’s triumphantly smiling face is there when the bolt is forced and the door flies open. His expression marks him as a participant in the group’s victory over Oskar’s brief refuge.

Restraint and Physical Violence

In another confrontation, Jonny and Micke arrive while Oskar is with Johan. Jonny singles Oskar out, and the encounter later escalates into an attack involving three boys and whips. As Oskar considers fighting back with a rock, Jonny strikes his thigh; Micke moves behind him and pins his arms at his sides. That intervention removes Oskar’s chance to use the rock and leaves him exposed to further blows. Micke’s clearest contribution to the bullying is therefore practical as well as social: he restrains Oskar so Jonny can continue the assault.
